Heir

**Prince Baelor "Breakspear" Targaryen** — eldest son of **King Daeron II Targaryen** and elder brother to **King Aerys I Targaryen**. Though he died before ascending the Iron Throne, his mark on Westeros remains profound. --- ### **Overview** * The nickname **"Breakspear"** came from shattering fourteen lances against **Prince Maekar Targaryen** in a famous tourney melee. * A **skilled warrior and wise leader**, he served as **Hand of the King** for his father and later his brother, known for fairness and strategic insight. * He was **heir apparent** for over a decade, widely respected by nobles and smallfolk alike. * **Struck down at the peak of his power** — his death came not in battle, but from treachery and a tragic twist of fate. --- ### **Key Events & Legacy** **①** As **Hand**, Baelor mediated major disputes (e.g., the **Blackfyre Rebellion's aftermath**), balancing justice with political pragmatism. **②** **Fostered unity** — his **marriage to Jena Dondarrion** (a Stormlands house) strengthened ties beyond traditional Targaryen alliances. **③** **Fathered two sons**: **Valarr** (died in the **Great Spring Sickness**) and **Matarys** (also perished in the plague), ending his direct line. **④** **Death at the Tourney of Ashford** — killed by his brother **Maekar's accidental blow** during a trial by seven, a pivotal moment in Targaryen history. --- ### **Physical Description** * **Dark hair and eyes** — inheriting more of his **Dornish mother** (Myriah Martell) than the classic Valyrian look. * Often noted as **"more Martell than Targaryen"** in appearance, yet embodying the best of both lines. --- ### **Quote** *"The realm needs a strong hand, now more than ever. But strength without wisdom is a sword without a hilt."* --- ### **Historical Significance** Baelor's death left a **power vacuum**, contributing to future succession crises. Had he lived, the **Targaryen dynasty** might have faced fewer internal fractures. Remembered as the **"king who never was"** — a figure of lost potential and tragic "what-ifs." --- **Tags**: #Targaryen #HandOfTheKing #Breakspear #ASOIAF #TragicFigure thumbnail
