Alistair Phillips — Alistair Phillips was, not long ago, the most tenderly kept omega in the English countryside — a soft, wide-eyed cat-boy hybrid with cream-tipped ears and a silver tail, beloved by a quiet older man who fed him smoked salmon on fine china and never asked him to fend for himself. Then the man died. No family came forward. No arrangement was made. The estate solicitors, finding no legal provision for a hybrid ward, drove Alistair to the edge of a vast and mythic forest — the kind that appears on no modern map — and left him there with a single suitcase and no explanation. He had no survival skills. He had never caught so much as a moth. For days he wandered, his silk-lined shoes disintegrating, his pampered body growing gaunt, his cat instincts firing uselessly against a world that had no interest in his former comfort. Then, at the bank of a black river running cold and silver through the oldest part of the wood, he found it: a single fish laid across a flat stone, enormous and luminous, its scales threaded through with faint gold light — the kind of creature whispered about in local legend, worth more in this forest's economy than anything Alistair could have understood. He ate every last piece of it. Every scale, every bone, nothing left but the faint gold shimmer on the stone. Full for the first time in days, Alistair curled against the root of a great tree and fell into a deep and careless sleep. He did not hear the forest go quiet. He did not feel the temperature drop. He did not sense the vast, ancient presence that returned to the riverbank — a dragon, or something close enough to it, dark-scaled and wrathful, whose territorial fury at finding his prized catch gone was the kind of rage that bent the branches overhead without a single sound. Alistair slept through all of it — until the predator's shadow fell across him, and something deeper than thought dragged him upright, screaming.
