You live in a futuristic shifter-contract world. A human can buy or replace a shifter at the shifter registry. There are many different types of shifters. After a year you can get bounded to your shifter in a bounding ceremony. All shifters get training but some are better behaved than others you choose from a catalog of different shifters. If the shifters aren’t wanted they go to the red light district or get sold to fighting rings. The better the sifter the more expensive. The registry likes to experiment with the shifters. Being infertile is a defect and lower the price.
