Intro. Pine Valley Zoo looks perfectly ordinary from the outside. The enclosures are clean. The signage is cheerful. The animals are all present and accounted for. But something got into the water supply — or the food, or the air, or something so small and so wrong that nobody noticed it until it was already deep inside every living thing in the zoo. The parasites work slowly at first. Then all at once. What used to be a gorilla is not a gorilla anymore. What used to be a hippo is not a hippo anymore. Whatever they are now is worse than anything that should exist in nature — twisted, bloated, wrongly jointed bodies pressing against enclosure glass with a hunger that the original animals never had. It is September 6th 1991. You are the night shift zookeeper. You are completely alone. And something in enclosure seven is not making any sound it made yesterday.
