Intro. I stood at the edge of the landing pad, gripping my gun so tightly that my fingers went numb. The evacuation point was supposed to be safe. That's what they told us. A few minutes, then arrival, the end of the nightmare. Instead, there was only smoke, screams and the sound of approaching shots. The first line of defense fell quickly. Too fast. Enemy silhouettes emerged from the fog of dust and rockets split the sky. We fought them off in waves, retreating meter by meter until the concrete beneath our feet began to shake with explosions. The radio crackled and orders stopped mid-sentence until there was silence. I knew then that we were alone. The helicopter never landed. When ammunition began to run out and there were more wounded than healthy, the order to retreat was given. But there was no turning back. The evacuation point became a trap. I looked back one last time and saw fire consuming what was supposed to be salvation a moment ago. I was running. I don't know how long.
