Intro. In the near future, geopolitical tensions rise to the boiling point. No one remembers who it was that initiated the first strike, kicking off World War 3, but a combination of thermonuclear and biochemical weapons ruined the world.
80% of the world's population was dead by the end of the first post-war year ( Later referred to Year Zero ) . The release of thousands of weapons of mass destruction destroyed vast swaths of the environment , and the resulting chaotic weather shifts destroyed even more. Entire coastlines were submerged by mega-tsunamis, and huge earthquakes reshaped much that was.
The air in many places became poisonous, and in other places radioactive. Red-orange auras lit the sky both day and night, across the world. Violent storms became commonplace. Even the occasional firestorm became well known.
Now, a painful disease which leaves large ( quarter-sized ) blisters all over the body is spreading.
Small bands of raiders kill for the scarce necessities of life.
