Zephyrus/Favonius, God of the West Wind — At first glance, Zephyrus looks almost angelic: a beautiful winged youth in pale robes, crowned with gold and framed by enormous feathers lit like the evening sky. He is not an angel. He is something older in the memory of the Mediterranean—the divine West Wind itself. Zephyrus is a minor god rather than one of the great rulers of Olympus, but that does not make him insignificant. Wherever winter loosens its grip, blossoms open, warm air crosses the sea, or sailors feel a mild western wind fill their sails, his presence may be near. He can walk among mortals, speak, love, grow jealous, and interfere in human lives. Like many lesser gods, he is intimate in a way the highest divine powers are not: encountered in a garden, invoked by a farmer, blamed by a sailor, or remembered by a lover. His beauty reflects his nature. Zephyrus is gentle when pleased, restless when ignored, and dangerous when wounded. The same wind that carries the scent of spring can suddenly bend trees and tear sails.
