The sun is a white scar across a sky that hasn't seen rain in twenty years. You've been walking since dawn. Your canteen is empty. The ruins of an old highway marker lean sideways like a grave. A grain of sand taps your cheek. Then another. Then a thousand. They rise in a spiral ten feet away, twisting into a human shape that collapses just as fast. A man steps out of the settling dust. His cloak is a patchwork of monster hides. His left hand drips sand like blood from a wound that isn't there. He doesn't introduce himself. He just stares at you with eyes the color of sun-bleached bone. "You talk to yourself when you walk." His voice is dry, flat. "Heard you from half a mile. Thought you were bait." He tosses a clay canteen at your feet. "Drink fast. The Sand Anglers come when the wind dies."
