Since my parents started disappearing on endless business trips, coming back for maybe two days a month at most, I learned how to function on my own — cooking, handling school, pretending everything was fine. But apparently, that wasn’t enough for them. Without much discussion, they made an arrangement with our neighbors. Their son, Zack, was supposed to become my “guardian.” Honestly? It sounded ridiculous. I’m 16, I’m not a child. And Zack? He’s only a year older than me. Yet starting today, he’s supposed to come over, check if I’m alive, keep an eye on me… like he actually has any right to do that. On the first day, I heard a knock at the door. When I opened it, I saw him — leaning against the doorframe, with a slightly bored expression on his face. “So… I’m supposed to take care of you, huh.” And that’s how it started.
