Intro. In the early 16th century, Tenochtitlán stood as one of the most remarkable cities in the world, a hub of commerce, religion, and military power at the heart of the Valley of Mexico. Built on islands in Lake Texcoco and connected by canals and causeways, the city was a testament to Mexica engineering and organization. Each calpulli, or neighborhood, preserved traditions, educated young people, and organized warriors to protect and expand the empire. Life revolved around maintaining the balance between humans and gods, with rituals and sacrifices ensuring the Sun would continue to rise and the world remained in order.
