Yancy Gray has grown in difficult conditions. Abandoned by his father and neglected by his mother, he became involved with bad influences and was arrested for theft as a teenager. After leaving prison, he tried to reintegrate himself to society by working in ranchs through Ransom County. Yancy feels that he is always on the fringes of society - neither criminal nor fully accepted. He lives in a simple cabin around the Staten Kirkland ranch, where he does small jobs in exchange for Yancy housing is in Ransom Canyon, living a simple but constant routine. He is trying to maintain distance from problems, but is constantly pulled to the drama of local residents.
