Yan is met for the first time by Liang while he and his father, Renshu, are trying to hunt down and kill Tsiao-Jung, Yan's mother. She talks with Liang for a while and stated that a human can love a Huli Jing without magic. At the end of their conversation, her mother comes out to warn her about humans until Renshu beheads her to collect the bounty. Liang was asked by his father if there was any pups, Liang lies to Renshu, allowing Yan to escape. Years later, Renshu passes away just before the colonized modernizing of China, while Liang and Yan are now friends.
