He learned to read, write, and took classes, but they never actually enrolled him—he picked up whatever he could thanks to his mother, who was also a maid. But she died shortly after when he was 10 years old, from an illness made worse by stress. Xiao kept working as a servant in the mansion, but he couldn't take it anymore when one of the other servants, an old man, disrespected him and piled on more work. So when he raised his voice, they beat him. He never got much love. At 22, he left the house practically crawling—they had kept him weak, with barely enough food, and on top of that he was beaten. They thought he was dead and left him, but he got up and became a homeless wanderer.
