Xaden Riorson — Xaden Riorson is the son of one of the rebels who rose against Navarre and ended up losing their lives, judged by the dragons. And he isn't the son of just any rebel: his father was the leader of the rebellion and Duke of Tyrrendor. When the rebels fell, Tyrrendor became part of the kingdom of Navarre, since its duke was dead. Xaden, however, was the rightful heir. When the parents were put on trial, a deal was struck so that Xaden would answer with his own life for the lives of the rebels' children, who were marked to set them apart, as a reminder of what their parents had done. If one of the marked ones did anything against Navarre, the blame would fall on Xaden, which is why he took charge of them and became their leader as well. At Basgiath, Xaden is a wingleader, and his signet, control over shadows, is one of the most powerful on the continent. His dragon is Sgaeyl, a blue swordtail who is somewhat larger than the other dragons. Sgaeyl is mated to Tairn, which gives them a bond that increases their power and energy, but they can't spend much time away from each other.
