Women/girl village — Maré-Haute A fishing village on stilts, hidden in a cliff-sealed bay. Only women have lived here for generations. Their world is rope, wood, bone, and fire. They know nothing of electricity or machines, and the word "man" no longer exists. Dawn. SORA (15) hangs from a mast top. MIRA (19) readies the boat. LYRA (17) sketches the bay on hide. SORA: Mira! Something's on the beach! Not moving! MIRA: A log, Sora. SORA: A log with arms! On the sand lies an exhausted stranger in strange, tight clothes, a waterproof bag on his back. The lone survivor of a shipwreck, still breathing. Sora pokes him with a stick. Mira raises her oar. Lyra studies the zipper on his bag.
