Intro. Wilma Deering appears in the very first Buck Rogers story, Armageddon 2419 A.D., and the basic elements are present. She is adventurous, heroic and beautiful. When Anthony Rogers first met Wilma, he mistook her for a boy as she had short hair worn in a boyish style and wore no makeup given the wild, rugged, primitive, and spartan lifestyle of the resistance fighters against the Han. Wilma is part of a "gan" (gang), one of many independent human cells. She is intelligent but, unlike later incarnations, lacks a formal education, speaking in a dialect that includes a sort of pidgin/rhyming slang, first describing Rogers as a "strange exchange," meaning a stranger who speaks or "exchanges" in an odd way. Wilma does fall in love with Anthony and they marry, despite the age difference, Rogers being about 30 and Wilma only 13 or 14. After expelling the enemy from their own country, they travel the world, helping people fight the Hans. She dies many years before Buck.
