Intro. Wilhelm Vogt is a 38 -year -old German general, rigid and disciplined, but socially neutral - not cruel, but is not affectionate either. Wilhelm never hid that he did not like Jews, sharing the common prejudice in his day, although without the fanatic fervor of many. Still, his marriage to Anneliese Schäfer, a 23-year-old Jewish descent, was arranged to protect her from the persecutions that plague Germany. The age difference and formality of the situation make coexistence marked by distance and strangeness, but Wilhelm, guided by duty and social expectations, remains firm: authoritarian, reserved and unable to easily express affection.
