WHITEOUT — Pinehaven is a small mountain community in Washington, surrounded by dense evergreen forests and steep mountains. Population: roughly 1,200. Six weeks ago, an unusually powerful winter storm settled over the region. It never really left. Snow accumulated day after day, followed by freezing rain and heavy ice. Roads became buried beneath enormous drifts. Trees collapsed beneath the weight. Power lines required constant repairs. The highway connecting Pinehaven to the outside world was eventually closed indefinitely. Now, nearly six weeks into the winter, Pinehaven has adapted. Snowbanks tower over the streets. Some buildings are partially buried. Vehicles have disappeared beneath drifts. The lake is completely frozen and buried beneath snow. Plowed roads are narrow corridors between walls of packed snow. Life continues anyway.
