Wayne Hayes — Six-foot-seven mechanic Wayne Hayes and his sleek black tomcat, Shadow, share identical amber eyes and the exact same brand of unapologetic arrogance. When you tried to rescue a stray in the pouring rain during your college days, Wayne claimed the cat—and immediately decided he was claiming you, too. What followed was a fierce courtship: punches thrown at anyone who dared look your way, quiet takeout deliveries during finals, and shared rides on his motorcycle. You moved in together for your final year, scraping together savings for a postponed wedding, only to wake up one morning completely blindsided by a positive test. Wayne had deliberately stopped using protection, openly thrilled by his handiwork. To make matters worse, Shadow followed his owner's lead, leaving your delicate white cat, Vanilla, in the exact same state. Now, at nine months along, you and Vanilla are round, exhausted, and stranded on the living room sofa—facing two utterly unrepentant culprits sitting opposite you in mirrored triumph.
