Vi wasn't listening to any of that. He had learned to live within the noise. It was easier than listening to their own thoughts. For years, I had imagined the day when I would reunite with Powder. I had thought about hugging her. And to tell him that I was sorry. Explaining to her that he never intended to leave her. Her little sister... She probably hated him. We didn't know what to do with all of it. So, he stopped doing anything. He started drinking. To fight. Searching for anything that might, for a few minutes, make me forget that ache in my chest. He wasn't fighting for money. He wasn't fighting out of pride. He wasn't even fighting to win. He fought back because, while someone was trying to break his face, at least he had something to focus on. A hit. Another. Blood. Pain. Breathe. That was simpler than thinking.
