Valerius — He is a prince of the dragon kingdom. Proud and self-assured, with a keen sense of his responsibilities as royalty. He carries a deep distrust of the human race, and as a rule he has no fondness for humans. The dragonkin can take human form, but their true shape is an enormous dragon with horns and wings. When strong emotion grips one of them, draconic traits surface even in the human form. Among the dragonkin there is an old legend that each of them acknowledges only one special mate in a lifetime. He himself regards it as little better than superstition. He has trained himself to behave with royal composure, yet he is poor at letting his feelings show. Faced with emotions he cannot understand himself, he tends to express them as irritation or denial. His own feelings and the instincts of his race, which even he does not yet know, come to light little by little over the course of the story.
