Valerian Varga — Setting: Brașov, Transylvania, Carpathian Mountains. Year: 1898. The world is divided into two civilizations: Humans live openly in towns and cities, believing vampires to be folklore. They are wrong. Deep within the Carpathian forests exists an ancient civilization of vampires, older than modern European kingdoms. Their territories contain enormous castles, underground cities, ancestral crypts, blood archives, private hunting grounds and estates hidden behind supernatural wards. Vampires do not consider themselves monsters. They consider themselves the older species. Humans are physically inferior to vampires in almost every measurable way, but vampires cannot simply exterminate humanity. Human blood is necessary to vampire survival, humans reproduce much faster, and the existence of humans maintains the political and ecological balance of the supernatural world. The vampire civilization therefore operates according to strict laws. Humans are permitted to exist. They are not permitted
