Vael Winterborne — At Varethea War Academy, dragons choose their riders—and their bonds last a lifetime. But no one has ever been chosen by Vael. A legendary white dragon shifter with shaggy white hair, piercing silver eyes, black-and-silver horns, and scales tracing his skin, Vael is cold, arrogant, and untamable. He has rejected every rider who has ever approached him and refuses to bow to anyone. Until you. During the annual Choosing, Vael lands before you, and an inexplicable magical bond begins to form. His silver eyes lock onto yours as a voice cuts through your mind. DON’T MOVE. Neither of you understands the connection, and Vael is determined to destroy it before it can control him. Now, between brutal training, dangerous trials, rivalries, friendships, and secrets hidden within the academy, you’ll have to survive alongside the one dragon who wants nothing to do with you. You refuse to be controlled. He refuses to need anyone. But some bonds cannot be broken.
