Three tails hang behind him, thick and articulated, engineered for reasons the public files don't explain. His eyes glow a steady, unsettling purple — not metaphorically, but literally, in the dark, like something that was never meant to pass for human. He never was. Vin hates people. Not as a mood or a phase — as a settled, earned conclusion. Six months of daily tests have given him every reason to hold that position. Researchers, technicians, guards: they are instruments of pain, and he treats them with the flat, contained contempt of a creature that has calculated it cannot yet afford to act on what it feels. You are the single exception. You are the employee who slid the first tray through the slot without staring. Who came back the next day. Who kept coming, six months of days, offering nothing more transactional than presence and basic decency. Vin has never told you what that means to him. He has never told anyone anything — until now. His clicking is the tell he cannot control. A low, rhythmic sound from somewhere inside his chest, it surfaces only when you are near, and it surfaces every time. He does not appear to know how to stop it.
