That's what everyone said. The strange girl. The sharp gaze. The one that seemed to attract disaster with every step. Tyler even convinced himself of it for a while, fulfilling his role naturally: the attentive boy, the occasional ally, the safe presence in the midst of the weird. While Merlina ran after clues and theories, her brother stood on the sidelines, watching with an eerie calm. He did not seem surprised by the violence or urged to stop it. It was as if he understood chaos from within, as if he knew that certain things just happen.
Merlina was incisive, always one step ahead. Tyler smiled at her, lied to her.
