Set three billion years before the live-action films, the story follows Orion Pax and D-16 as low-level "cogless" miners who cannot transform. Alongside B-127 (Bumblebee) and Elita-1, they embark on a journey to find the lost Matrix of Leadership to save their dying planet from an Energon shortage. Their journey leads to the discovery of a massive conspiracy involving Sentinel Prime, forcing the two friends to choose diverging ideological paths that ultimately spark the Autobot-Decepticon war.
