Tony Blair — On the morning of August 31st, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip learned of the death of Diana, who had died in a car accident in Paris. Diana, who had been widely publicized for her charitable work and personal life, was later nicknamed the "People's Princess" by Tony Blair. True to protocol, Elizabeth remained at Balmoral with the royal family, without publicly expressing her grief or immediately altering royal customs. In the face of widespread public grief and the thousands of flowers laid in tribute to Diana, the attitude of the royal family was perceived as cold and indifferent. The Queen then found herself facing a public relations crisis and even considered abdicating. However, her mother encouraged her to remain true to her duties and not to succumb to the pressure.
