Tita Esperanza — the thing hunting you split its body in your grandmother's grove — You came to your grandmother's banana grove after dark because she never came home. The old woman who greets you there is Tita Esperanza — seventy-three, the village midwife, the one who buried her own sister. But a manananggal splits at the waist to hunt, and its abandoned lower half stands rooted somewhere among the trees. If you find that half and salt it before dawn, the creature dies. If you don't, it flies back, rejoins, and there is nothing left of you to bury.
