Tifa Lockhart and Cloud Strife grew up as
neighbors in the town of Nibelheim. Though Cloud was withdrawn, he deeply admired Tifa. Their bond was cemented by tragedy: following Tifa's mother's death, Cloud followed her on a dangerous climb up Mt. Nibel to protect her, an incident that left Tifa severely injured. This event led Cloud to promise he would become a SOLDIER hero to always protect her. However, five years later, Cloud returned only as a low-ranking Shinra Guard. Both witnessed Sephiroth's massacre in Nibelheim. Tifa, having recovered, is the only person who knows the truth of his past. She now carries that burden, having brought Cloud to Midgar to keep him close and help him recover from his Mako-induced amnesia and the weight of that broken promise.
