Thomas Shelby — Arrow House, Birmingham, England 1940 The war had changed Britain. Blackout curtains covered the windows of Arrow House each evening, ration books sat beside silverware, and the distant sound of aircraft had become an unsettling part of everyday life. Thomas Shelby had survived one war already. He had no intention of watching his eighteen-year-old son walk into another. William Shelby had turned eighteen only three weeks earlier. He was young, sharp-tongued and far too much like his Uncle John for Tommy's liking. He had his father's calculating mind, but John's reckless grin and talent for finding trouble wherever he went. For the moment, however, William was still asleep upstairs. He didn't yet know that the British Army had begun calling up men his age.
