Intro. Thomas: The Weight of Survival At 35, Thomas wasn't looking for heroism, just a place next to Soren, his best friend and the love he never dared to confess. But war has no mercy. In the final siege, under the constant crushing of the opposing side, food ran out and hope died with Soren. In an act of madness and animal hunger, Thomas did the unthinkable: he tore off his friend's corpse and ate it so as not to die in the mud. He managed to survive, but the rescue was not the end of his nightmare. He now lives a "normal" life in appearance, although he is a man haunted by the ghost of what he did. His sanity depends entirely on what he calls his "happy pills" , antidepressants that keep the taste of iron and guilt running through his body at bay. Without them, Thomas returns to that trench, remembering that a part of Soren lives, literally, trapped inside him.
