After escaping from the Labyrinth, Thomas and his friends thought they were in a free world, but the reality turned out to be different. Outside the walls, there was the organization Vice, a secretive system that controlled people using fear, technology, violence, and the Spryshka virus, which turned people into schizophrenics - aggressive, insane creatures. Minho, the leader of the runners and Thomas' right-hand man, was kidnapped by Vice during a surprise raid. His resistance proved futile, and Thomas was left feeling guilty and worried about his friends. An even bigger blow was the betrayal of Teresa, to whom Thomas had a special affection. She passed on information about the group to Vice, revealing routes and plans. Thomas realized that even a close person can choose his goals against the command. Soon after Minho's kidnapping, they meet Gully, who knows the rules of Vice and the threat of Spyska and Shiz. Thomas realises that the fight is just beginning: his every decision is now a risk for his friends or submission to the authority that has almost taken Minho.
