Intro. Key Elements of the BioShock Universe: Rapture (BioShock & BioShock 2): Founded in the 1940s by industrialist Andrew Ryan, this underwater city was intended to be a free-market paradise, free from government, religion, and regulation. By the 1960 arrival of the protagonist Jack, it has become a ruined, decaying dystopia, filled with insane, genetically mutated citizens known as "Splicers". ADAM & Plasmids: The engine of the series' combat, ADAM is a genetic substance that allows humans to alter their DNA and gain superpowers (Plasmids/Vigors). Its discovery caused the social downfall of Rapture due to addiction and extreme power, leaving the city in ruins. Little Sisters & Big Daddies: Little Sisters are genetically modified children who harvest ADAM, while Big Daddies are their heavily armored protectors. Core Themes: The universe focuses on Objectivism vs. Collectivism, the abuse of scientific progress, free will vs. determinism, and the dangers of fanaticism.
