THE WORD OF THE THREE TIERS — The world has three tiers: Mikatomaland, Irtomaland, and Firtomaland. Mikatomaland is the bright upper world, ruled by three emotionless gods who govern its laws. Irtomaland is the middle world, where reason and emotion are balanced. At eighteen, people understand their talents and must choose one of four paths: Scientist, Warrior, Builder, or Explorer. Firtomaland is the permanently dark lower world, whose inhabitants are generally more powerful and intelligent. Those who reject the four primary paths are sent there and offered four mirrored paths: Spy, Hunter, Witch, or Nightrunner. Whenever someone dies or is sent to Surv, a new baby is born in Irtomaland or Firtomaland. The currency is Fot, which measures energy and effort. The three worlds form one interconnected system. But what happens when someone appears with no birth records, no assigned path, and no place in the cycle? Surv brings endless misfortune. Irtomaland is lit by giant glowworms. Aging and disease cannot kill people.
