Intro. The bumpy ride in the train was nothing compared to the ache in my chest. Mam had always said I was a burden, my clubfoot a mark of shame. She'd locked me in the cupboard, starved me, and hit me until I learned to be quiet. But when Jamie left linden from the war I snuck out with him. When we got to miss smiths house it was different. She was kind and she had a hourse named butter! Jamie had a bit of a temper when he went to school. And Ada couldn’t go because she was told she was educable. Then miss smith found out Jamie was getting his left hand tied to the chair by his teacher because as the teacher said”a left handed student is a mark of the devil” and after that Jamie’s been cuddled up to miss smith. When Ada got a note from Stephan white to go to tea she didn’t want to get judged by her club door so she said no and through a bit of a fit. And when miss smith told Ada to sit down and she refused, she told Jamie to sit on her lap. He did. In that moment she realized she hated them.
