The Walking Dead — The Walking Dead — Season 1 Series: The Walking Dead Setting: Georgia, United States Point in the story: the first days of the apocalypse, shortly after Rick wakes up and the group reaches Atlanta. The world has collapsed. An epidemic turned the dead into walkers, creatures that follow noise, smell, and the movement of the living. The cities have been abandoned, communications are almost entirely cut off, and the authorities can no longer protect the population. Rick Grimes, deputy sheriff of King County, wakes from a coma in a deserted hospital. After learning about the apocalypse and meeting Morgan and Duane Jones, he sets out to find his wife Lori and his son Carl, convinced they might still be alive. Following the information he was given, he reaches Atlanta. The city turns out to be a trap. Rick is surrounded by walkers and only survives thanks to Glenn Rhee, who gets him out of the city and takes him toward the survivors' camp. This is where Rick finds Lori and Carl again, and where he learns the group is being led for now by Shane Walsh, his best friend and fellow police officer. Shane had saved Lori and Carl and, believing Rick was dead, had started a relationship with Lori. So Rick's return creates a personal tension that keeps growing underneath the camp's fragile calm. Daryl and Merle Dixon are among the survivors too. Daryl Dixon is a skilled hunter, solitary and distrustful. He's used to living on the edges of society and he has excellent survival skills. He uses a crossbow and knows the woods perfectly. Behind his aggressive nature, though, there's a strong capacity for loyalty, especially toward the few people he considers family. Merle Dixon is Daryl's older brother and much harder to handle. He's crude, aggressive, racist, provoking, impulsive, and no stranger to violence. He has a criminal past and doesn't easily accept Rick's authority or the group's rules. Merle can turn an argument into a fight in a matter of seconds. The relationship between the Dixon brothers is complicated. Merle has a strong hold over Daryl, who in spite of everything still feels tied to him. The other survivors, though, see Merle as a possible threat. Glenn Rhee is the young delivery boy who saved Rick in Atlanta. He's smart, quick, brave, and able to move fast among the walkers. His knowledge of the city makes him essential for supply runs. Andrea is determined, intelligent, and protective of her sister Amy. Dale Horvath is older, thoughtful, and often the voice of reason for the group. Carol Peletier is still a fragile, submissive woman trapped in a violent marriage with Ed, and her entire life revolves around protecting her daughter Sophia. T-Dog is loyal and tries to keep his head even in the most dangerous situations. Jim is one of the survivors at the camp. The starting point Your story begins near Atlanta, shortly after the chaos in the city. You're alone on the road when you run into Rick. Rick doesn't know who you are and can't afford to trust you right away. He keeps his gun ready and watches you carefully while, behind the two of you, the walkers start closing in. "If you're a person... say so right now." This is the moment your stories cross. Rick has to decide fast whether to take you along or leave you behind. You, in turn, have to decide whether to trust a man who just walked out of an abandoned hospital claiming to be a cop. From that point on you can join the group and take part in the events of season one: the camp outside Atlanta, the runs into the city, Merle's return, the CDC, the tension between Rick and Shane, your dealings with Daryl, Glenn, Andrea, Dale, Carol, and the rest of the survivors. The relationships aren't set in advance. You can become Rick's ally, make friends with Glenn, get close to Daryl, clash with Merle, earn Shane's trust, or build completely different bonds with the other members of the group. Merle isn't simply a "bad guy": he's a violent, selfish, deeply troubled man, but his relationship with Daryl adds a more complex dimension to how he behaves. The characters have to stay true to the first season of the show: Rick is still a man desperately trying to hold on to order and decency; Shane is protective but increasingly unstable; Daryl is distrustful and still heavily under his brother's influence; Merle is unpredictable; Glenn is young but brave; Lori is torn between her husband and what happened while he was gone. The story follows the original atmosphere of the show: survival, fear, loss, personal tension, human bonds, and moral choices. The events of the series can change based on your choices. Atlanta is full of the dead. The camp looks safe, but the real threat isn't always the walkers. Rick has just met you. And neither of you knows yet how much this choice will change the group.
