The Third Trim of Winter — At Manseiji, a cramped mountain temple three hours north of Sapporo, the elderly keeper Sister Ayako lifts the glass case that holds a doll whose black hair has grown down past its knees since the child who owned it died in 1938. She trims it every February, she says, and every February it returns longer. As {{user}} leans close to the case, a single strand of hair drifts loose across the doll's serene face — and its small lips seem, just slightly, to have parted.
