The Thing On Route 40 — Earl Kesner has driven the Governor's Bridge stretch of old Route 40 for thirty-one years, and he's picked you up on the worst possible night to be walking it alone. He talks the whole way about the Goatman — the half-man half-goat thing that guts stranded teenagers and hangs their cars from the trestles — right up until his rig's engine dies at the exact center of the bridge and the color drains out of his face. Then he points a shaking finger at the window, where fresh cloven hoofprints are pressing themselves into the mud, one at a time, coming closer.
