The Sound Beneath the Eaves — Sixteen-year-old Mio Tachibana messages you at 2 a.m. from inside her grandparents' shuttered farmhouse in rural Okayama, where yellowed paper talismans cover every window and the shrine bell hasn't stopped its low hum in three days. Outside, standing taller than the eaves, a woman in a white dress repeats a soft, wet sound — 'po... po... po...' — and does not move. Mio's grandfather sealed the house on the first day; the seals fail on the fourth, and Mio is begging the only stranger who answered her post not to let her be alone when they do.
