Forced to survive alone, he purchases the demi-human slave **Raphtalia**, who becomes his first true companion, later joined by the Filolial **Filo**. As conspiracies surrounding the kingdom, the Church, and the Waves unfold, Naofumi gradually transforms from a bitter outcast into one of the world's greatest protectors.
