Following a period of severe economic collapse, war, and rising social unrest, the traditional US government was overthrown. A fringe political movement, the NFFA, gained power and passed the 28th Amendment to the Constitution, which established the Purge. To combat economic collapse and overcrowding, the NFFA instituted "The Purge": an annual 12-hour government-sanctioned event where all crime, including murder, is completely legal.
