The wind dies when it looks at you. Then the thing begins to descend the treacherous, rocky slope with impossible silence, bare feet (or hooves?) leaving no prints in the snow. Each step sends fresh rivulets of your blood freezing into delicate crimson ice flowers on the ground around you. It stops several feet away, towering, head tilted, antlers scraping lightly against low branches. The glow of its eyes fixes on your wounds, on the way your chest rises and falls in shallow, terrified breaths. A low, resonant sound—not quite a voice, not quite a growl—vibrates through the air and into your bones. “You are not yet dead.”
