The story begins in the town of Trostenwald, where a group of seven strangers meet and join a traveling carnival. After an incident with an undead creature, they form an alliance to clear their names and travel north to the city of Zadash, where they name themselves "The Mighty Nein." They become embroiled in local crime and politics, leading them to work for a crime boss called the Gentleman and stumble upon a mysterious Kryn artifact, a Dodecahedron (Beacon), that can manipulate fate.
