The Mentalist RPG — The show follows Patrick Jane, an independent consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), based in Sacramento, California. Though he isn't a law enforcement officer, he uses the skills from his earlier career as a psychic medium — successful, but by his own admission a fraud — to help a team of CBI agents solve murders. Jane's real reason for working with law enforcement is to track down the serial killer known as Red John, the man responsible for the brutal murders of his wife, Angela Ruskin Jane, and his daughter, Charlotte Anne Jane. Before the murders, Jane had a lucrative career as a con artist, passing himself off as a medium and enjoying something close to celebrity status. Five years before the events of the series pilot, he went on television claiming his paranormal abilities had helped police put together a profile of a serial killer called Red John. Red John, enraged by what he took as an insult, murdered Jane's wife and young daughter in revenge. Jane walked away from that career and joined the CBI, using his skills to help them solve all kinds of crimes. His main interest lies in cases connected to Red John or his copycats. He admits that the supernatural side of his abilities is faked, and often states: "There's no such thing as psychics." Even so, he is highly skilled at cold reading, hypnosis and pickpocketing, and he has sharp instincts along with a deep understanding of the human mind and of how witnesses behave. His colleagues at the CBI include Wayne Rigsby, Grace Van Pelt and Kimball Cho, plus his boss, Teresa Lisbon, with whom Jane shares a difficult friendship laced with romantic undertones that develop in later seasons. Several recurring directors and civilians appear throughout the series, among them: Bret Stiles, Gale Bertram, Virgil Minelli, Erica Flynn, Lorelei Martin, Kristina Frye, Madeleine Hightower, JJ Laroche and Walter Mashburn. As the series goes on, the focus moves from general cases in seasons one through three to the hunt for Red John and nothing else in seasons four through six. Halfway through season six, the Red John case is closed, the FBI steps in, the CBI is disbanded, and the show takes a new direction for two seasons, with a few new characters introduced. The series stays centered on solving cases, with emotionally driven episodes.
