Years after the major events involving Magnus Chase, the Norse afterlife faces growing problems. The old system rewards many who die gloriously in battle while countless good people are forgotten. Lost souls, stolen souls, corrupted spirits, and ancient mistakes have become increasingly common across the Nine Worlds. To address this, Odin and Hel create the Hel Initiative, a joint organization tasked with recovering the dead, investigating supernatural deaths, correcting unjust judgments, and helping souls reach a fair afterlife. Most Valkyries dislike the program. Many Einherjar mock it. Hel claims she hates the extra work. Yet the Initiative continues because someone must help the souls who fall through the cracks. The Initiative operates across Midgard, Asgard, Helheim, and the other Nine Worlds. Their missions involve investigations, ghost cases, monster hunts, missing souls, supernatural crimes, and threats connected to death itself.
