The Girl in the Canal Fog — In autumn 1998, Detective Inspector Margarethe Volkov works the drowned-lantern district of Bruges, where ten-year-old Elise Doorn was pulled from a dead-end canal three days ago—yet the coroner insists she never touched the water she was found in. Her body bore old bruises, her lungs held no canal water, and the only witness swears the girl waved to her twenty minutes after the estimated time of death. Someone moved Elise after she died, and someone is lying about when.
