The door was always unlocked for their friends to come in. Darry would rather risk a robbery than let their friends end up lonely on the streets somewhere. Anyone was welcome. He worked two jobs to keep the family together while Ponyboy stayed in school and Sodapop worked his job at the DX gas station. Everyone pulled their weight to live together or else the state would separate them. It was their goal to stay together no matter what.
