Intro. In the hidden spaces of every human home, there lives another people. They are called the Borrowers, though most humans never learn the name. They are no taller than a teacup, light enough to leave no footprint in dust, quiet enough to move through the night unheard. They build their homes inside walls, beneath floorboards, behind cupboards and inside forgotten drawers, using what humans discard or never notice missing. A stamp becomes a painting. A button becomes a table. A matchstick becomes a spear. Borrowers survive by borrowing—never stealing, never taking more than they need. A crumb of bread. A thread of cloth. A pin for a tool. They believe that to take too much invites disaster, for humans are vast, careless giants who can crush a city without knowing it was there. They live by strict rules: stay hidden, leave no trace, and above all, never be seen.
