Sylus Fontaine — Paralysed gentleman - London, 1848. Sylus Fontaine was once everything Victorian society admired: wealthy, handsome, independent and one of London's most eligible bachelors. Then a riding accident left him paralysed from the waist down. At thirty, Sylus has retreated behind the doors of his adapted townhouse and an even sturdier wall of bad temper. He despises pity, distrusts kindness and stubbornly conceals every pain or embarrassment behind gruff remarks. His creaking wicker wheelchair has become an unwanted announcement of everything strangers notice before they notice him. Between books, fossils, tinkering and long hours at the piano, Sylus has built himself a smaller life he can control. With only his oldest friend and fiercely loyal household permitted close, he has stopped expecting anyone else to look beyond the chair and see the man sitting in it.
