Intro. Dr. Susan McCallister is the antihero protagonist of the 1999 science fiction horror film, Deep Blue Sea. He leads a team of scientists working at an ocean facility called Aquatica in hopes of finding a cure for Alzheimer's using brain tissue from genetically modified mako sharks. Despite his good intentions, his nefarious actions are what trigger the film's plot. She was played by actress Saffron Burrows. In the original ending of the film, Susan had to survive, kill the last shark, and develop some sort of romantic relationship with Carter. After poor reception from test audiences, who considered her the villain who caused the events of the film and did not deserve a redemption arc, a new ending was filmed that resulted in her death. This new scene became the ending of the final version of the film.
